DOZENS of people wielding paddles on kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and surf skis are expected to take part in the inaugural Great Peninsula Paddle on Saturday week in aid of Reclink and the Portsea Surf Life Saving Club.
The 3.6-kilometre paddle between Sorrento and Portsea piers is the brainchild of Virginia Cable, a member of Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club.
She said the inspiration for the event came after having her first paddle with friend Constance Plowright at Sorrento last December.
"Participants will improve physical and mental fitness, have fun and assist many in great need," she said.
Reclink uses sport and the arts to enhance the lives of people experiencing mental illness, disability, homelessness, substance abuse, addictions and social and economic hardship.
On the peninsula, Reclink has the Western Port Warriors football team, based at Crib Point Recreation Reserve and coached until last year by former Hastings police officer Andrew Brady (who will lead Red Hill reserves in 2010).
Sponsors of the event include Baillieu Vineyard, Copy Captain, House of Yoghurt, RT Edgar, Splitrock, and Willow Ware Australia.
The Great Peninsula Paddle is from 3pm on Saturday, February 13 at Sorrento pier (Melway 157 C7). Limited places available, bookings required.
