Island's loss a boost for Baxter

Island's loss a boost for Baxter

17 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
The race for fourth place continues in MPCA Provincial grade after yet another riveting round of cricket on Saturday.

The win for Peninsula Old Boys kept them in the hunt for the four, beating the Islanders by 18 runs.

Crib Point made sure of a place in the finals with a commanding win against Frankston YCW.

Ballam Park kept its slim hopes alive with a smashing win against Heatherhill, ending the Hills' chances of playing finals cricket this season. Heatherhill, however, can be proud of their achievements following the mass exodus of players in the off-season.

Mt Martha hung on to fourth place with a win against Moorooduc. The Reds went for the outright but the Ducs dug deep and denied the Reds their 20 points.

Mornington has kept its chances alive, beating Sorrento by more than 100 runs. One questions why the Doggies, who are eight points behind Mt Martha, would not have had a crack at the extra eight points by trying for the outright.

After making 9-217, the Doggies bowled out Sorrento for 99, a lead of 118. Rather than put the Sorras in again and at least having a crack, they decided to bat again.

Adam Smith was superb for the Dogs in his first senior game for the season, picking up 3-11 from eight overs and Matt Foon and Glenn Wood each claimed two wickets.

Jason Jacoby scored an unbeaten 54 for Mt Martha in its total of 8-196 against Moorooduc. The Ducs made 66 in their first innings and 5-170 in their second dig. Joey Lane scored an unbeaten 103.

Paul Hartle scored 71 and Stuart Doolan 45 for Long Island against POB on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to get the 12 points.

The Old Boys' bowlers did a sterling job. Adam Jones was superb with 5-95 and Dylan O'Malley claimed 3-22.

Baxter rolled Somerville for 106, with Adrian Mack snapping up 6-20 and Marc Uccello 3-33.

Baxter has a second shot with the bat after making just 145 in its first dig. Shane McComb belted 108 to help his side to 5-166 at the close of play. Mal Coutts took 2-18 to make it five for the match.

Crib Point passed Frankston YCW's 115 with just one wicket down, finishing on 1-127. Luke Herrington was unbeaten on 54 and Matt Blake on 46.

Ballam Park resumed on 1-59 against Heatherhill (121) and finished on 322. Glen Prendergast finished with 69, Hamza Siddique made 63 and Andrew Tweddle 62.
