Battle for fourth position hots up

03 Feb, 2010 11:44 AM

THERE is a real battle for fourth place in MPCA Sub-District cricket after round eight on Saturday.

With three games to go, the top three places have been sewn up by Skye, Flinders and Baden Powell, which have a two-game break on the next three teams.

Skye is on 84 points, a game clear of Flinders and the Braves on 72.

Tootgarook (48) dropped out of the four after being comprehensively beaten by Flinders, while Seaford Tigers (48) jumped into the top bracket with a massive win against Carrum Downs.

Pearcedale, after looking gone before Christmas, is also well in the mix on 48 points after beating Skye.

Tyabb had a dramatic draw with Rosebud, which has placed it in a difficult position to make it with 44. The Yabbies lost the toss and were sent in to bat in week one, scratching to 181 after Geoff Glaum hit 65 batting at No.9.

At 4-96, the Buds were still favourite to win but that quickly became 6-128. They again looked safe at 6-172 but they were all out for 181 in the 68th over. Paul Nelson was fantastic for the Yabbies with 6-53 off 22 overs.

Pearcedale successfully chased the 180 needed against top side Skye. Things were tight all afternoon but the Dales made it to 8-186 and victory.

Baden Powell made light work of Dromana, bowling out the Hoppers for 115. Elia Carter was sensational, taking 5-16 off 12 overs and Anthony Smith, in his first senior game for the year, claimed 3-31 off 16 overs.

Seaford Tigers dismissed Carrum Downs for 154. Glenn Corrigan snared 2-2, Warren Junkeer 2-6, and Ben Turner 2-14. Nathan Harford top-scored for the Cougars with 63, and Ryan Lynch was solid with 51.

Matthew Burns claimed 4-26 and Mark Maddock 3-10 as Flinders thumped Tootgarook.
