Whales have returned to Port Phillip and Western Port on their annual migration from the Antarctic to warmer waters off Queensland. This humpback mother and calf gave passengers on the Sorrento to Queenscliff ferry their money's worth on Sunday when they cruised into Port Phillip and along the southern peninsula coastline. A Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman said whales had been visiting the two bays for at least six years. DSE warns boaties must not deliberately approach whales closer than 100 metres. Within 300 metres vessels must use caution and travel at low speed. Touching or feeding whales and dolphins is prohibited, with rule breakers risking heavy fines. Pictures: Andrew Mackinnon
