Rescue after jump from pier

03 Feb, 2010 12:03 PM
POLICE have almost certainly saved the life of a woman found unconscious in the water after jumping off Rye pier.

Three fishermen sounded the alarm about 3am yesterday when they saw the 19yearold jump from the landing at the end of the pier.

Senior Constable Michelle Bradley and Acting Sergeant Danny Riddle of Rosebud police were nearby investigating reports of a street disturbance and were able to get to the pier within minutes.

Acting Sergeant Riddle said they used torches to find the woman, who was floating about 40 metres from the pier.

"She was unconscious and not moving when Michelle jumped in the water," he said.

"Michelle, who's a keen surfer, started to drag her about 200 metres to the shore and yelled out that there was no pulse."

Acting Sergeant Riddle also waded in to the sea and helped drag the woman ashore, where paramedics were able to bring her back to consciousness.

"She was heavily intoxicated and very lucky that there was someone on the pier when she jumped in. There was no way she could look after herself," Acting Sergeant Riddle said.

He believed the woman had been in the water about 20 minutes. The fishermen, who had said hello to the woman, had called for help after the sounds of splashing subsided.

The Rye woman was taken to Frankston Hospital and released later in the day.
