New group to help guide port

28 Oct, 2009 11:11 AM
THE Port of Hastings Corporation is forming a new community reference group for the next stage of port development.

The final meeting of the former 10-member group was held a fortnight ago.

The port is calling for expressions of interest from groups and individuals for the new, expanded CRG that will help guide the first stage of port expansion outlined in the Freight Futures report released two months ago. PoHC chief executive Ralph Kenyon said the group would be the go-between for "a two-way conversation between the Western Port community and port management".

"Our plans need to be considerate of the needs and aspirations of the local community. The PoHC recognises that significant contributions can be achieved through the ongoing involvement of the community during port planning."

The group will oversee the next three years of port planning that will largely focus on the existing jetties at BlueScope and Esso's Long Island plant.

Mr Kenyon said the group would comprise members representing social, environmental and economic interests.

An information session for prospective CRG members will be held at 5pm on Wednesday, November 4 at the Lady Nelson Room, Hastings Marina.
