Farmers' market a fresh way to shop

10 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
SCARECROWS were strolling around Mt Eliza Village on Friday, bringing tidings of a new market that organisers guarantee will sell food "direct from the source".

Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce promotions manager Lucinda Bakhach said: "It's all about the food and having the choice to buy it direct from the source. What's more, there is as little impact on our environment as possible and it tastes great.

"Our market is aligning with the Victorian Farmers Market Association and is aiming to be the peninsula's first accredited farmers' market, which means there will be no on-sellers, re-packagers or craft and bric-a-brac."

Among the food on sale will be free range eggs, cheeses, seasonal vegetables, apples, tomatoes, pastries, condiments, seafood, and boutique beer and wine.

Ms Bakhach said the chamber had decided to organise a farmers' market "based on a worldwide trend towards the pursuit of natural and authentic sources of food, reignited passion for protection of our precious environment, awareness about reducing our carbon footprint and a yearning for links back to a time and place in which community spirit flourished."

■ Mt Eliza Farmers' Market is on at the Village Green 8am-12.30pm on the fourth Sunday of each month.
