THE fate of the sixth annual Colour the Sky kite festival was up in the air on Saturday night.
It was a sleepless night for the organisers of the Rosebud festival, who feared torrential rain might continue, forcing the cancellation of the festival.
Intermittent heavy cloud threatened to break throughout the day, but a short burst of light rain at about 12.30pm did not thin the crowd.
The weekend's wild and changeable weather caused the cancellation of some planned activities - the RAAF Roulettes cancelled due to inclement conditions at their Gippsland base and the closure of Tullamarine airport on Saturday night stymied the travel plans of a guest kite flier from South Australia.
However, Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad kept its engagement to provide a sea rescue display and a guest kite flier from New Zealand wowed the crowd with his airborne antics.
Rosebud Chamber of Commerce marketing manager Alison Doherty, who co-ordinated the festival, said about 8000 people attended, about the same as last year.
"It was a pretty sleepless night on Saturday, panicking about the weather, but we were absolutely delighted with the numbers we got," she said.
